Recently, more and more researchers have looked into using CBD oil for dogs.  

CBD works for dogs because, as with all mammals, every dog has an endocannabinoid system. 

This system affects all parts of your dog’s body – their skin, mood, brain, and beyond. 

As with humans, the endocannabinoid system is affected by cannabinoids, which are the active ingredients in cannabis and hemp. 

CBD is one cannabinoid that can affect your dog’s endocannabinoid system for the better.

CBD can treat a number of canine ailments. 

Studies have shown that CBD can treat a number of ailments in both humans and dogs.

Recent research has shown that CBD can help dogs in the following ways:

• A study conducted in 2012 indicated that CBD, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, improved the skin of dogs with inflammatory skin conditions
• A 2017 study looked at the effects of CBD oil on epileptic dogs. The study found that the dogs who had CBD oil had fewer seizures than those who had a placebo. It found that CBD was an effective way to treat seizure-prone dogs.
• A 2018 study on dogs with osteoarthritis found that CBD oil reduced pain and helped them be more active than usual.

In addition to the above studies, a recent survey of US veterinarians showed that many vets felt that CBD was an effective treatment for managing pain, relieving anxiety, and decreasing the frequency and severity of seizures.

Of course, CBD oil might be able to treat even more conditions than those mentioned above.

We know that CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation, depression, and pain, among other things.

Further research is needed to verify the other benefits that CBD might offer dogs.

What You Need to Know About Buying CBD Oil for Your Dog

It’s important to be sure that you’re buying quality CBD oil. The packaging should state that the oil contains CBD. 

It should also state how much CBD the oil the product contains in milligrams (mg).

Remember that products labeled ‘hemp oil’ don’t always contain CBD, as not all parts of the hemp plant contain CBD.

Be sure to buy your CBD oil from a reputable company. 

Unfortunately, there are companies out there that claim to produce products that contain CBD when their products actually contain no CBD whatsoever. 

What to do Before You Give Your Dog CBD

So far, research has indicated that CBD oil is safe for dogs.

It’s unlikely that your pet will experience any side-effects, although it might make them a little sleepy. 

If the oil is THC-free, it should not get your dog high.

THC is the intoxicating element of cannabis, but CBD isn’t intoxicating.

Bottom line?

CBD is widely considered safe for your dog to consume.

That said, it’s always a good idea to speak with your veterinarian about using CBD oil for your pet. 

A recent paper found that only 45.5% of US veterinarians felt comfortable discussing CBD oil with clients and many didn’t feel confident in their knowledge of CBD oil, although most believe that CBD can be beneficial for pets. 

So, be sure to seek out a veterinarian that has experience with using CBD.

Lastly, make sure that you’re giving your pet the right dosage. 

The dosage will depend on the strength of the CBD oil, your dog’s condition, and their weight.

Is it Legal to Give Dogs CBD?

Short answer: it’s legal to give your dog hemp CBD oil.

Long answer: this is a twofold question.

Firstly, it’s important to know there’s a difference between hemp CBD oil and cannabis CBD oil. 

The former obviously comes from hemp, which is legal pretty much everywhere, and the latter comes from cannabis, which is illegal in most countries at present. 

So, chances are that hemp CBD oil is both legal and accessible where you are. 

Cannabis CBD oil, however, is only available in certain places where marijuana has been legalized.

Sometimes cannabis CBD oil also contains THC, the cannabinoid in cannabis that makes you high. 

THC can intoxicate dogs, and we know that cannabis is toxic to dogs. 

There aren’t any specific laws to outlaw giving your dogs cannabis oil, but it might harm them, so it’s best to give them hemp CBD oil and avoid THC containing products for your dog. 

The Difference Between Humans and Dogs When it Comes to CBD

The primary difference between treating humans with CBD and treating dogs with CBD is that there is more research focusing on humans than on dogs.

Because dogs can’t speak for themselves, it’s important that you monitor your pup’s behavior after you give them CBD. 

If you give them the correct dosage it’s unlikely that they’ll experience any side effects, but it’s important to be cautious whenever giving your pet a new supplement.
